Recent National Insurance Rises

Did you know? GP Practices are not exempt from the recent National Insurance rises.
Unlike NHS Trusts, General Practice hasn’t received additional funding to offset this increased cost. That means GP surgeries — which are already working at full capacity — must absorb this themselves, further tightening budgets that are already under immense pressure.

This matters because general practices are independent contractors to the NHS. We’re funded through fixed streams like the global sum and enhanced services — but there’s no “extra pot” to cover rising costs like NI contributions, inflation, energy bills, or the increasing cost of staff salaries. Every pound we spend on unavoidable overheads is a pound we can’t invest back into staff, services or patient care.

Many patients don’t realise that GP surgeries are not centrally funded in the same way as hospitals — and we want to raise awareness of this gap in support.

📢 The Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM) continues to advocate for fairer funding and recognition of the financial pressures that GP practices face.
